Last week's Resident Forum presented the resolutions and reports pertaining to graduate medical education adopted by the American Medical Association-Resident Physicians Section (AMA-RPS) at its Interim Meeting in December. This week we present the adopted resolutions and reports pertaining to public health and other topics.

Regulation of Herbal Preparations asked the AMA to encourage efficacy studies on dietary supplements and to advocate for the federal Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act to be modified to require that companies that produce dietary supplements meet several criteria before marketing the supplements. These criteria include receiving Food and Drug Administration (FDA) preapproval for evidence of safety, meeting the US Pharmacopeia criteria for dosage, quality, purity, packaging, and labeling, and meeting the FDA postmarketing requirement that adverse effects of the supplements be reported to the FDA.
