To the Editor: The cover story by Dr Southgate¹ discussing Baseball at Night contains 3 errors. First, Schoolboy Rowe's real name was not "Preacher," but Lynwood. Elwin Roe, another pitcher, was known as Preacher.²

Second, the unreferenced statement "Satchel [Paige] ended Dizzy's [Dean] 30-game winning streak" does not appear credible. Using data from Retrosheet,³ it is very difficult to believe that even with exhibition and 2 World Series games, Dean could have won 30 straight games after he lost to the Cubs on August 12.

Third, it is incorrect that "in 1934, lights were not new, having been around for some 50 years already . . . on the other hand, major league parks were just beginning to install them. . . . " The first major league game played at night was on May 24, 1935, in Cincinnati.⁴ A semiprofessional game had been played on August 27, 1910, using portable lights in Chicago's Comiskey Park,⁵ although no . . .
