The second edition of Modern Hematology updates all that the first edition covered, adding new diagnostic methods and providing a new presentation of immunology. It advances understanding and appreciation of the subject by introducing the genetics behind molecular biology. It is part of a series (Contemporary Hematology, edited by Gary J. Schiller, MD) that includes other books on hematologic malignancies, stem cell transplantation, and transfusion. This book works as a stand-alone text for its intended purpose of providing a practical approach for diagnosis and management.

Organization goes beyond chapter headings. Each chapter begins with a list of contents that are further divided into headings within the chapter, allowing quick reference. There is no bibliography in each chapter but rather "suggested reading" of applicable journal articles within the last 15 years.
