While children are still being taught to learn from books and the written media, it is my impression that the personal habits of many qualified physicians, coupled with current continuing medical education documentation requirements, are resulting in less and less medical knowledge being acquired the old-fashioned way, ie, by reading books. It sometimes seems that books on clinical medicine have become relegated to the domain of medical students, postgraduate trainees, and book reviewers.
Readable volumes, useful for busy clinicians, are still produced, however, and Acute Ischemic Stroke is one of them. Written by physicians and surgeons from the Massachusetts General Hospital, it provides an up-to-date primer on all of the major aspects of acute stroke care. Indeed, I can think of no more efficient way for an emergency department physician, neurologist, or other physician wanting to become involved in the early management of patients with stroke to quickly get up . . .
