Citing the discovery of unhealthy levels of formaldehyde exposure in emergency housing used in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, the Sierra Club and other environmental organizations, groups supporting fair and safe housing, along with nearly 5000 individuals have petitioned the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to boost regulations on formaldehyde emissions from composite wood materials found in household products and building materials.

The petition calls on the EPA to use its authority under the Toxic Substances Control Act to regulate formaldehyde emissions from wood products. The agency has 90 days to respond to the petition; if does not agree to regulate these products, the Sierra Club plans to file a lawsuit against the agency.
