I appreciate the opportunity afforded by the publication of these letters to expand on the editorial entitled "Fifty Hours for the Poor" that we now have published in three consecutive Decembers.1-3

An original purpose of this editorial was to copublish in the principal American professional journals of medicine and law on some subject that representatives of these two great old learned professions could agree on (rather than continue our well-known posture of fighting). In this we succeeded.

Subsequent to the initial publication, the American Bar Association made the title of the editorial its official policy.4 The then President of the American Medical Association, James E. Davis, made service the theme of his term and expanded the charge to 4 hours per week, adding the option of community volunteerism in addition to patient care.5 The American Medical Association's Board of Trustees then established the annual . . .
