I applaud Dr Beck for recognizing that, despite my best effort to feign erudition, my historical attributions were nothing more than clever bluffs. Calling the bluff and chastising the bluffer are crucial skills for the attending who practices the art of pimping and I thank Dr Beck for his timely demonstration.
I must, however, disagree with his characterization of the word pimping as a neologism coined either by mistake or with the intent to sensationalize. I first learned the term 6 years ago as a medical student at Columbia. An informal survey of my colleagues reveals use of the word at Pitt, Maryland, Bowman Gray, Johns Hopkins, BU, and Harvard. I have received more than 30 letters from physicians throughout the country who understand the word as I do.
